The Most Spellbinding Moments From The Harry Potter Reunion

Harry Potter Reunion

Name a 90s born who doesn’t owe the Harry Potter franchise fond memories from their childhood. It’s been 20 years, but it still feels like yesterday that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released. In the 10 years it took for the makers to make eight movies out of the seven books written by J.K. Rowling that sold more than 500 million copies world wide, one of the highest ever. In those 10 years, most of us grew up and still couldn’t shake off the allure of Harry and his drove, trying to fight a prophecy that led Voldemort to single handedly bring havoc upon the wizarding world. We celebrated their victories and cried with them when our beloved characters died (who can forget the death of Dumbledore, Snape, or heck, even Dobby?).

Lucky for us, HBO Max brought back the cast in an informal reunion of sorts via a 1 hour 43 minutes show that made most of us Harry-Potter-inge-watchers sigh over collectively in relief. The special, which was a mish-mash of conversations and anecdotes of members of the cast and the filmmakers, done without a host in a completely organic manner felt more like a bunch of friends getting together and reminiscing about the good days and less like an interview.

We watched the reunion, ruminated its entire contents and came up with the top 5 moments that will always have us going back for more. Take a look!

Tom Felton and Emma Watson’s Heart to Heart

If you ever needed stronger evidence to normalise platonic love between two people, Emma Watson and Tom Felton’s conversation is it. About halfway through the special, Tom and Emma who played Draco Malfoy and Hermoine Granger, who were one swish of the wand and a couple of spells away from killing each other, declared their mutual love toward one another that although not romantic in nature means a lot to the two.

Daniel Radcliffe’s Crushing on Helena Bonham Carter

Let’s just agree that HBC was the best part of the Harry Potter reunion just like her villainous character, Bellatrix Lestrange. But nothing beats the conversations between the two, especially the part where she pulls out a letter Radcliffe wrote for her and makes him read it. “I do love you, and I just wish I’d been born ten years earlier. I might have been in with a chance. Lots of love, and thanks for being cool.”

The Phoenix Prank

A major throwback moment was courtesy of Daniel Radcliffe and director Chris Columbus who haven’t worked together since Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Set in Dumbledore’s office, the two discuss when they were in on letting Richard Harris, who played the Hogwarts headmaster in the first two films, believe that the phoenix was a real bird and not an animatronic version. Harris died after the second part and was replaced by Michael Gambon who died in the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the hands of Severus Snape.

The Great Hall of Secrets

For as long as we can remember, the floating candles have been the most iconic part of the great Hogwarts hall that has seen everything from the great sorting of students into houses to elaborate Christmas dinners. To make the candles appear floating, they were suspended from the ceiling with clear fishing wire until the ropes caught on fire and started falling around the Great Hall, as Radcliffe recounted. With the green screen and CGI permeating into and replacing actual sets these days, the fact that the actors experienced actual candles tied to ceilings, despite the fact that they were slightly hazardous, was something that they cherish — and so do we.

The Main Three

But the most ‘spellbinding’ part of watching the Harry Potter reunion was witnessing our three favourite characters together after nearly a decade since the last movie came out. It was funny to watch them recount how they never realised that they were working with some of the biggest names in British Cinema — Gary Oldman, late Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith among many, many others. It was also heartwarming to see each of them talk about the perils of benign child actors to the point where they couldn’t separate themselves from their characters and how they were all incredibly strong for each other.
