If you’re well-versed with the ABCs of makeup, you’d know some basic rules of thumb – not pairing a bold eye and a bold lip being one of the most significant listings. We’ve all heard this and believed this. Well, I did too until I came across this alluring look of Sara Ali Khan. Ngl, it’s got me rethinking about bold eyes and lips together. However, just like every other complex makeup look, this too comes with caveats – you can’t pair jet black smokey eyes with a bold red lip under normal circumstances. But, something about SAK’s look makes it look wearable, easy and not so in-your-face. Perhaps, this could serve as a great source of inspo for our occasional looks. To understand the do’s and don’ts of this look better, we spoke to Kavye Sharma, the makeup artist behind it who shows us the right direction for this look.

“Well, the ideal makeup look is the one in which you strike a perfect balance between eyes and lips. Basically, pick one feature you wish to highlight the most and keep the other one natural. While that makes the makeup look great, you must also remember that there’s no rulebook where this is written. Nude eyes and lips are relatively easier as opposed to pulling off bold eyes and bright lips. That’s why people suggest picking one feature at a time but that doesn’t become God’s truth,” quotes Kavye. He adds some hacks, “Ensure the rest of your makeup is subtle. Keep your face clean and dewy, don’t add too much colour on your cheeks (like highlighters, heavy blush or deep contour). Choose colours that don’t overpower each other and are equally noticeable. For example dark brown works gorgeously well with deep pink.”

The Base
As per Kavye’s expertise, a soft and subtle base is key. Almost essential. I cannot agree more – after all, you’ve got to balance things out. “So for the base, I always start with moisturising the skin with a lotion that’s non-greasy, provides long-lasting hydration and helps restore the skin’s natural protective barrier,” tells Kavye. He also gives a quick glimpse into the base makeup, “Since the star of the show are your eyes and lips, keep the base soft and dewy so that all the elements complement each other in the end. Use less on the skin, opt for water-based foundation and powder your T-zone.” Finally, add some colour and definition. Kavye emphasises on some, “Keep the skin soft as seen on Sara Ali Khan. Blush and highlighter are there but soft enough to be just visible and not over power.”

The Star Duo – Eyes & Lips
It will take you a few attentive gazes to comprehend the hue used all over the eyes. Yes, it’s brown – giving that bold effect minus the stark black. “I’ve used a brown pencil instead of a black kohl because black comes across as harsh as compared to brown. Brown coal balances the overall look, neutralising everything and yet making an impact,” explains Kavye. He takes the brown eyes to the next level by teaming ‘em up with a bright matte pink lipstick – gorgeous! As a pro tip, this is what Kavye recommends, “For a look like this where your eyes and lips are bold you also need to take the outfit and hair into account. Opt for soft natural waves or maybe go for a sleek look. Everything should be well-balanced. That’s key.”
