“To the girls out there, we all can make it!” So tweeted Ruchira Kamboj, India’s first woman to take charge as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. If this isn’t enough to fire you up, we don’t know what is. While we have our sights set on medals at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games, with our Indian athletes, especially sportswomen, bringing home laurels, this news comes as the icing on the cake.
An Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1987 batch, Ruchira was the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan prior to this, and earlier, she has served as the High Commissioner in South Africa and also the Chief of Protocol. She will succeed T.S. Tirumurti, who has retired from the foreign service, as the 22nd Indian representative at the UN. Interestingly, while she is the first woman from India to be the country’s permanent representative, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (Jawaharlal Nehru’s sister) had twice been designated the chief delegate to the General Assembly.
Ruchira, who presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday, is scheduled to preside over the Security Council in December. India is an elected member to the Security Council, and at a time when there are heightened international tensions owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Ruchira will be dealing with intense pressure from all fronts over India’s stand on the issue. But we are sure our newly elected Indian envoy will rise to the occasion with her special expertise – Ruchira has been a member of the G4 team made up of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, that works together on expanding the Council’s permanent membership. She also has a wide range of experience working with multilateral organisations. Her previous stints include serving as Permanent Representative to the UNESCO in Paris, deputy head of the Office of the Commonwealth Secretary-General in London, and Counsellor at India’s mission in New York.
In her tweet, Ruchira expressed that it is an honour for her to serve India in her new position, and a privilege to be the first woman to hold this position. We wish her all the best!
