The red carpet season that began with the Screen Actors Guild Awards is here in full swing and from the looks of it, our favourite celebrities will continue to keep us entertained with their high-wattage looks through March (the Oscars are just around the corner) and well into May when the show will finally take a much-needed break post the Met Gala and the Cannes Film Festival. But, before we reach the mega events that have celebrity stylists prepping half-of-a-year in advance, let’s take a minute to discuss the red carpet looks that inundated our Instagram feeds the minute we logged in on Monday morning. We’re dissecting the 10 best outfits we spotted at the BAFTA Film Awards and the Critics Choice Awards that were held in London and Los Angeles.
The only thing more amusing than the fact that Lady Gaga attended both the awards shows, held within 24 hours of each other halfway across the globe, was how simple the looks really were. Straightforward column gowns dominated the red carpet, but that doesn’t mean that opulence was in short supply. Luxurious velvet in a dark colour palette that ran the gamut from black to burgundy was spotted on several dresses, as was the colour gold that automatically gave outfits a rich feel. Although structured and avant garde outfits were missing, there were a few looks that managed to make its wearers reach our best-dressed list.
Emma Watson in Oscar de la Renta

One of the most daring looks at the BAFTA Film Awards, Watson’s custom gown from Fall 2022 featured a risque neckline, a completely bare back, and a voluminous tulle skirt. She wore the dress with black heels with serpentine straps.
Selena Gomez in Louis Vuitton

Selena Gomez took a sharp departure from her signature black outfits and chose a red dress with a halter neck-cape hybrid neckline and a thigh-high slit from Louis Vuitton at the Critics Choice Awards. The attached cape is definitely our favourite.
Lady Gaga in Ralph Lauren

Lady Gaga turned toward the most quintessentially American designer, Ralph Lauren, to channel her old Hollywood persona at the BAFTA Film Awards in an emerald green gown with plunging neckline and a train. Of course, she injected the look with her signature goth with a pair of black sky-high platform shoes.
Elle Fanning in Oscar de la Renta

Elle Fanning’s gilded strapless A-line dress with embroidered buttercups was feminine and statement-making, and perfect for the Critics Choice Awards red carpet.
Naomi Campbell in Burberry

Supermodel Naomi Campbell turned up to the BAFTA red carpet in a black velvet dress from Burberry by Ricardo Risci that featured exaggerated amoeba-like sleeves.
Elizabeth Olsen in Giorgio Armani

Another velvet outfit on the red carpet was worn by Elizabeth Olsen who chose a Giorgio Armani marsala jumpsuit with a plunging neckline and a crystal belt delicately cinching her waist.
Adwoa Aboah in Saint Laurent

Model Adwoa Aboah brought just the right amount of goth glam to the BAFTA red carpet with her Saint Laurent by Anthony Vacarello strapless column dress from the designer’s SS22 collection.
Mandy Moore in Elie Saab

The This Is Us actor wore an otherworldly toga-inspired piece from designer Elie Saab’s SS22 Paris couture collection to the Critics Choice Awards, and won the fashion critic’s award for best-dressed for sure.
Kristen Stewart in Dolce & Gabbana

Kristen Stewart chose a Dolce & Gabanna cocktail dress to that she managed to infuse with her signature grunge vibe on the Critics Choice Awards red carpet. But our favourite part of the look was her absolute refusal to wear any visible jewellery except a few barely there rings and a bracelet.
