What makes the lehenga the best wedding outfit even for the guests? That’s simple; it’s breezy, which makes it perfect for hot weather, it’s comfortable, and also looks stylish considering the many contemporary edits that designers have warranted to the traditional outfit over years. The lehengas has found its admirers not only in Indians but also among people of other ethnicities, and especially with international celebrities who have started nailing their lehenga looks with much aplomb and have made it their go-to for attending weddings of people from the Indian subcontinent. Recently, model Liya Kebede turned toward the humble lehenga as her outfit of choice to attend a wedding and joined legions of celebrities like Sophie Turner, Lupita Nyong’o, and Beyoncé whose wedding-apropos looks have taken the internet by a storm.

Recently, the 44-year-old model chose an emerald green coloured Banarasi lehenga by designer Anita Dongre to wear to her friend’s wedding. The lehenga, titled Alethi, is handwoven by artisans and features gold brocade flowers, a popular leitmotif in these kinds of lehengas, but arranged in a contemporary manner such that only the lower half of the lehenga is inundated with them. The choli, too, is brocade with intricate gold accents on the neckline, sleeves and the underbust. But our favourite part, though, is its extreme backless-ness held together by a dainty dori.

What’s really interesting about Liya’s look is how the model has added her signature contemporary cool to the look by swapping traditional Indian jewellery with layers of delicate necklaces and simple hoop earrings. Her accessories of choice? Bangles in green and blue.

Liya’s look is perfect for both wedding guests and summer brides who want to keep their look simple yet statement. The lightweight lehenga packs a punch without weighing its wearer down. The handwoven lehenga, the epitome of Indian handloom, is also great for furthering Indian handicraft, and especially eco-conscious slow fashion.

What do you think of Liya’s minimal Indian look?
