Here’s a brief overview of the options available to you if you are having difficulty conceiving...
INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)
Sperm from your partner will be injected directly into your uterine cavity. IUI usually works within four treatment cycles. It if doesn’t, it is unlikely to work for you. Note that IUI may result in multiple pregnancy where more than one egg may get fertilized, resulting in twins or even triplets or quadruplets.
IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF)
Your partner’s sperm and your egg will be combined in a laboratory dish, and after fertilization, the embryo will be transferred to your uterus. This method is used when infertility is caused by endometriosis; immunological problems; unexplained infertility; and male factor infertility.
THERAPEUTIC INSEMINATION BY DONOR [TID]
Sperm from an anonymous donor will be used to fertilise your egg. This a treatment option if your man is infertile.
SURROGACY
A surrogate mother is a woman whose uterus is used by a couple to have a baby. Surrogacy is two types: One where the surrogate mother is inseminated artificially by your husband's sperm; in the other, the your egg and your husband’s sperm will be transferred to the surrogate mother; or fertilized in vitro by IVF first and then the embryo transferred to the surrogate's uterus.
Surrogacy is an option when a woman has no uterus either because it is absent from birth or because it has been removed surgically. Those who have had multiple miscarriages; or failed IVF attempts can also try this.
