Sedentarism is a curse that accompanies modern life. Given the many comforts and conveniences we have at our disposal today, people have little motivation to get their daily dose of physical activity. This doesn’t cost them in their youth, but snowballs into big problems like chronic diseases and mental illnesses as they grow older. It takes some doing to beat this quicksand situation. Here are a few tips that can help:

Sit Less

Sitting is the new smoking. It slows down the circulation of blood in your body and can lead to obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems. Try to follow this as a rule of thumb: For every one hour that you sit, stand up and walk around for a minute or two.

Take The Stairs

If you can’t find time to do a full-fledged workout, incorporate small movements in your everyday activities. Start by taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible. It’ll make for a quick cardio workout and give you a rush of endorphins.

Another way to pack in some movement in your daily routine is to help around the house. Instead of always expecting someone else to open the door, get you a glass of water, put the clothes to dry or mop the floor, take the initiative to do these things yourself from time to time.

Walk Short Distances

We have gotten so used to modern day conveniences that even something as simple as walking down a short distance instead of driving ourselves there, feels like a lot of work. Not only does this take a toll on our health, but also the environment. It’s time we change this habit.

Stretch Your Body

We underestimate the benefits stretching brings to our health. It evaporates the stiffness accumulated in our body from leading a sedentary lifestyle and prevents muscle and joint pain in the long run. After every few hours of sitting at a desk, make sure you give yourself good stretch.
