Why The Gender-Based Discrimination When It Comes To Condom Usage?

Free Condom

A female condom, also known as an internal or vaginal condom, is barrier-style contraception that prevents the male sperm from entering the vaginal canal and fertilising the egg, which can lead to pregnancy. While male condoms have always taken the centre stage, due to the ease of use and availability, female condoms have seen sluggish growth and adaptability amongst the sexually active population. Here are some reasons why this may be the case…

Societal Preconceived Notions

In a society like ours, where sex is still considered a masculine domain; female pleasure or products designed with an intention to put women in charge are still not given a vantage point, let alone priority. With this un-progressive mindset, the popularity of female condoms will take a while before it reaches its pinnacle.

Availability

Male condoms have been present in the Indian market for decades, hence making their availability and visibility very common. Female condoms, however, are a relatively recent launch in India and are still trying to gain popularity in order to make the shift happen.

Price Point

Male condoms come at various price points, making them affordable for all pockets. Female condoms are steeply-priced for the masses and may end up falling into the category of once in while experimentation.

Lack Of Variety

Flavoured, ribbed, dotted, ultra-thin, glow in the dark, etc. are various types of male condoms and chances are that every person may have their preference and loyalty towards a brand. Female condoms, on the other hand, do not offer an exciting array of options, which may turn off people.

May Look Complicated

Wearing a female condom is not as simple as a male condom. It looks like a longish pouch and has to be inserted inside the vagina and positioned correctly before engaging in sexual intercourse. Many women complain of the condom moving too much during coitus, making it uncomfortable and leading to loss of sexual excitement.

While the factors could be many but the truth remains, female condoms have been designed to let women take charge of their sexual health and wellness. They no longer have to depend on a man to keep themselves safe from unwanted pregnancies or catching STI’s, most commonly acquired from unprotected sex. This in itself surpasses all the limitations that may seem to come with choosing female condoms over male condoms. Most importantly, female condoms can be worn for up to eight hours before intercourse, so you can fully indulge in uninterrupted pleasure. Now that’s a win-win for both the partners, isn’t it?
