Sustainability was the big theme at the FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week. Most designers focused on the concept of repurposing deadstock fabric or the outfits itself into making newer creations. So, we took a couple of cues from them and decided to look inward, into our existing wardrobes, precisely, for outfit ideas for an at-home Dussehra celebration without giving in to the need of buying new clothes. Think of these ideas as sustainable styling hacks for the upcoming festive season ahead. All they require are your old lehengas, kurta sets, saris, and a will to experiment.
Wear Your Lehenga Skirt With a Festive Blouse

The wedding-worthy lehenga in your closet, perhaps from your own or the one that wore as a guest, can be repurposed as a festive outfit by swapping the embroidered blouse with a plain white shirt or its frilly, femine organza version such as this one as seen in Tarun Tahiliani’s styling. For a festive look, pair the top with a simple single strand kundan necklace or classic chandbali earrings.
Elevate Your Simple Kurtas With a Heavy Dupatta

For a look that’s equal parts simple and festive, choose a plain kurta set and elevate it by wearing it with a statement dupatta. Inject colour-blocking into the look by choosing a complementary colour or keep the look monochromatic like the fashion influencer Prerna Goel in her Raw Mango kurta set with a Banarasi silk dupatta. You can also wear your kurta sets with the dupatta from your lehenga set, or repurpose your old embroidered or handloom sari as one instead of discarding it.

If you belong to the fashion camp that likes plain saris, make the look festive by wearing them with elaborate blouses or cholis that are a mainstay in lehengas. Blouses with full-sleeves and plunging necklines have appeared in collections of all bridal designers in this season of FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week, indicating that one should invest in them.

You can supplant your blouses and get creative with t-shirts, crop tops, or any other going-out top that catches your fancy. If you’re a fashion risk-taker, then you can wear print-on-print styles like Dolly Singh here or Shereen Sikka, who is wearing her kitsch sari with a fitted full-sleeve top.

Subvert the norms of festive dressing and shake things out of predictability by mixing and matching clothes out of your existing closet for a new look. Leave it to designer Anamika Khanna to modernise even the most quintessentially Indian outfits, case in point - a sari. She styled the sari with pants and a trademark Anamika Khanna patchwork jacket and made it perfect for the garment’s new-age wearers. One can ditch the sari and wear the outfit with a dupatta, too. Accessorise with stacked necklaces, a pair of heels and statement rings for a look that’s the definition of Indian grunge.
