This August, the month of our 75th Independence Day, Femina celebrates the Defenders of Our Freedoms, women who are at the forefront of ensuring liberty and safety on a national level. With this feature on women from across India’s armed forces – the Army, Navy and Air Force – we reiterate our respect and gratitude both for the service they offer and the inspiration they provide to women across India and the world

“Life in the defence services brings you challenges every day and that is what we have been trained for.” – Squadron Leader Minty Aggarwal
What made you want to join the Air Force?
I have grown up seeing my father in uniform (he is now retired), and this instilled a sense of patriotism, love and devotion in me for my country; hence I decided to join the IAF. My journey in the Air Force has truly been very challenging. Life in the defence services brings you challenges every day and that is what we have been trained for. With support from my team members and my seniors, I am able to achieve what the organisation expects from me as a professional.
What are the top lessons being part of the armed forces has taught you?
Being in the Air Force as a Fighter Controller, one must keep learning, stay positive and focused, and be alive to every situation. You can give wings to your dreams with continued and untiring effort. As a Fighter Controller, every day is exciting and challenging. We are actively involved 24x7, 365 days a year. Our untiring efforts ensure that the Indian airspace is secure at all times.
What makes the Air Force the perfect fit for you?
My life has changed manifold after joining the Indian Air Force. It is not just about the quality of life, but also about the pride that you get in serving the nation and the satisfaction of doing something meaningful. You get so many opportunities to develop yourself on so many fronts, be it physical, adventure, professional courses, hobbies and so on.

What does ‘freedom’ mean to you?
On August 15, 1947, India got a new life. We, the young people of India, have a big responsibility on our shoulders which our ancestors have bestowed upon us. For me, freedom means to unblock our minds and think about the development of the nation, in whatever manner we can contribute.
“Things will be challenging, numerous hindrances will come in your way, but, if you are focussed and determined, no one can stop you from realising your dreams.” – Squadron Leader Minty Aggarwal
A message for women across the country…
I believe that your gender does not matter, your aspirations do. It is your inner desire and what you demand from yourself that will lead you to your goals. There is no substitute for hard work. Always put your best and give your 100 per cent. Things will be challenging, numerous hindrances will come in your way, but, if you are focussed and determined, no one can stop you from realising your dreams. Also read: #DefendersOfOurFreedom: Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh
