Blame it on our lifestyle changes or environmental issues, infertility issues among couples are on a rise. Several health experts blame lack of exercise, and other unhealthy habits. However, with advancement in science and technology, now we have cure for certain aspects of infertility with medication and lifestyle changes.
Fertility has always been considered sacred, and society, oftentimes, looks down upon women, who have been unable to conceive. Women have been ostracized, blamed, and ridiculed for being infertile since time immemorial, with the emotional scars haunting them till their last day. The feelings of pain, agony, disappointment, guilt, fear, stress, and hopelessness erode the soul day by day. Few lucky women have the emotional support of their partners, but a majority of them fight the battle all alone.

Dr Durga Rao, co-founder and medical director, Oasis Fertility, alone “Certain things are beyond reasoning and hence we need to accept and find possible solutions rather than cribbing. Of late, people have started understanding that infertility issues are prevalent in men as well and the woman alone is not responsible. There are millions of couples who have attained parenthood through infertility treatments. Remember, there is light at the end of the tunnel and there is no need to lose hope!”
Everyone understands the plight of women facing infertility issues, Dr Rao believes. There are several reproductive issues a woman might face right from puberty to pregnancy and postpartum to menopause. Scientific advancements have brought tremendous changes in the field of fertility treatments which are beyond belief. She adds, “With IVF, IVM, donor sperm, donor embryo, and several other technologies in place, one has to come out of feelings of guilt and shame. Acceptance is the key here which will help you focus your energy on getting treated. Some women may have problems with fallopian tubes, some may suffer from uterus-related problems, some others may have hormonal problems. So a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work here.”

Many women postpone their plans of consulting a doctor hoping that they will conceive sooner or later. But women’s fertility decreases with age, so if you are unable to conceive even after trying for a year, you should consult a fertility specialist who can devise a personalised treatment plan for you depending on your age, Body Mass Index, health records, etc.
Dr Rao shares few tips on how women dealing with infertility can go about the difficult times.
No Comparisons, Please!

The most important rule is to not compare your treatment journey with anyone else. Remember that every case is unique and everyone responds differently to treatments. Unnecessary comparison will only lead to stress and frustration.
It’s A Joint Venture
Speaking your heart out to your partner is essential as it will give you a sense of connectedness and strength. The journey towards parenthood requires equal commitment from both partners. This is a time for both individuals to unite and be empathetic.
