Alia Bhatt, while promoting her new movie, Darlings, was seen in a pair of tattered denim pants and a white shirt, doing two things for our wardrobes: 1. Bringing back the ripped denim style from the early aughts 2. Wearing it with a white shirt and restoring our faith in the power of the simple classic. She paired the look with the Devon Chunky Heeled Sandals, a signature style from the Italian fashion brand, The Attico, and finished the look with a pair of simple textured hoops from Lune.
The denim, from HUEMN, is from the brand’s Boat X Huemn collection showcased at the FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week earlier this year where it was showcased along with the their asymmetric bralette top — a sharp departure from how it was seen on the actor who injected the street-inspired look with her signature femininity. But Pranav Kirti Misra, founder, HUEMN, welcomes the actor’s take on his 1000 panel distressed denim that was designed in line with his brand’s edgy aesthetics. “I see this as a collaboration of different creative forces,” he says, talking about Alia’s final look that encapsulates the brand’s philosophy which is open to interpretation of its wearer.

“These women are leaders of today,” says Pranav about a legion of Bollywood women who are incorporating HUEMN’s outfits into their wardrobe. “They have a certain voice which is very powerful and when that translates into something like clothing, it leads their audiences to make better, homegrown choices.”
For Pranav, HUEMN has always been a collaborative platform that uses its clothes to reflect on society. “Fashion, by nature, is a torchbearer of what is going to be happening tomorrow,” he stresses. “If you have to lead the community, you cannot be designing for today. You need to have one foot in the future. But to stay ahead of the curve, you have to make sure that you have the right balance of ingredients — which is giving people 70% familiarity and 30% newness,” an approach he took for elevating a garment as ubiquitous as denim when he patched denim together to bring new texture and grunge to the garment.
It’s interesting to note how Alia is choosing her pregnancy to experiment with her style, and push the envelope by stepping out of her sartorial comfort zone. It is almost as if her style evolution is symbolic of her own transition — a fierce 30-year-old woman who is standing on the cusp of motherhood.
