We’ve heard celebrities citing a mascara, concealer, brow powder or perhaps some blush as the one makeup product that they can’t step out without – but what about lipstick? You may have seldom spotted a celeb flaunting that bare lip look and maybe then they’ve still put on a pale nude lippie. Forget celebrities even you (and me too) wouldn’t want to step out in absence of a pleasant pout. That’s what lipsticks mean to every woman out there – significant, indulgent and game-changing, even.

The colossal lipstick market is a testimony of the love and ardour, the premier position that the product owns. However, more often than not selecting the right lipstick can be challenging and confusing too – the ten stashes overflowing with lippies in your vanity are to be blamed. But, also the lack of understanding with regards to colour theory as a concept. And due to this, you may land up wearing a lippie that is not so flattering. More factors than your mood influence the choice of lipstick you should be opting for. Here are some expert-approved tips by celebrity makeup artist Florian Hurel that will uncomplicate the process for you.

Why Is Using The Right Lipstick Important?

When I asked Hurel this question, he was quick to say, “Very often.” “What might look good on someone need not always look good on the other. People who are not from the creative background pick a wrong shade because of the lack of knowledge on colour theory and skin undertone,” he continued. “Have you ever noticed some lip shades make you look dull? A wrong lip shade can make the face look washed out or dull, hence picking the right shade is vital. Especially when people prefer wearing minimal makeup, they must pick the correct products,” says Hurel.

What Role Does The Outfit Play?

We’ve all thought of matching our lipsticks with our outfits at some point. While that outlandish choice may work sometimes, that may not be the right approach to narrow down on your final lipstick. “Understanding the basics of colour theory can come in handy here. Complementary colour schemes look good, for instance if you’re wearing a green outfit, a red lip would look stunning; then there is a monochromatic colour scheme where you use the same colour on the eyes, cheeks and lips to match with the outfit that looks stellar,” explains Hurel. He adds, “If the outfit is elaborate and strong I’d like to keep the lips more muted.”

Factor-in Your Skin Tone

“It’s important to know your skin tone to do justice to any makeup product,” cites Hurel. Everyone’s been talking about skin tone for a while now – what it is, why it matters and how it should influence the products you wear. “Say if your skin tone is warm and you wear a cool undertone nude lip shade, it won't blend with the skin, making the face look washed out and dull, hence the skin tone and lip colour undertone have to be in sync,” explains Hurel. He also reveals why warm undertones are highly preferred, “More often than not Indians have a warm undertone so wearing the same undertone on the lips would be flattering.”

What About The Textures?

Speaking of lipsticks, there are numerous textures to think about – matte, creamy, glossy, satiny, velvet matte, powder and so on. Just like picking the right hue, picking the right texture is equally critical. This is because it gives you the freedom to pick a vibe for your look. Drab or fab – you decide. “All finishes look good so one can pick their preference, just ensure that lips are well moisturised before applying any lip shade. If someone is very young a glossy finish will enhance their skin whereas a matte finish would make the face look a bit more mature. Someone with mature skin concerns (like dryness, fine lines, wrinkles) should use something more hydrating (satin or glossy) on their lip as it will make the skin look more healthy and young,” suggests Hurel.

  • Not picking a lighter lip pencil than the lip shade and instead, going for either the same colour or a deeper colour is an absolute no-no as it will contour the lip shape.
  • Apart from those colours that don’t go with the skin undertone, pick warm tones if you have a warm skin undertone and pick a cool tone lip shade when the skin undertone is also cool.
  • Picking a shade without understanding the basics of colour theory like complementary colours can lead to dissatisfaction with the end look.
  • Lastly, wear your lip shade with confidence, if you’re not comfortable with it, it will show; go with what feels more of your style of makeup and not because everyone else is wearing it.
